Using The Bookbar Control Panel
The Bookbar
Control Panel allows you to rearrange your Alert Bookmarks Toolbar by
renaming, deleting, re-arranging, and password-protecting entire
Bookmark Bars. From this window you can also Export bookbars in a
format that other users can use, allowing you to share collected
bookmarks with friends or business associates.
You can access the
Panel in two ways:
The Bookbar
Control Panel initially appears as shown below:

To access another
Bookmark Bar without rotating through bars, you can click on the name
of that Bookmark Bar in the list.

To access the
Control Panel's Tools, click the Tools Button as shown above.
The Control Panel will expand as shown below:

Editing Bookmark Bars:
-
To create a
new Bookmark
Bar, click the 'New Bar' button. A new bar will be
inserted at the currently selected position in the list of bars.

To Delete a
Bookmark Bar, click the 'Delete Bar' button. The currently
selected bar will be deleted.

To give a
Bookmark Bar a different name, click the 'Rename Current Bar'
button and enter the new name. When you're finished, click the 'Done'
button and the new name will show in the list and on the red Bar Indicator.

To Change The
Order Of Bookmark Bars, simply select the bar you want to move
from the list of bars at left, then click the 'Up
or Down Arrows
to move that Bookmark Bar within the list.

Exporting &
Importing Bookmark Bars In Other Formats:
1. Export As
Alert Shared File:
This version of
Alert Bookmarks lets anyone share collected Web site addresses, email
addresses, or other bookmarked resources with other Alert Bookmarks
users. Exported Bookmark Bar files are saved with the .ABF
extension. You can export as many bookmarks as you want in this version.
To Export
Bookmark Bars and their contents:
-
From the list of
Bookmark Bars that appears in the Bookmark Control Panel, select the
bars you wish to Export by highlighting them.

Select the the 'Export
As Alert Shared File' radio button, then click the 'Import/Export' button.

A file window will
appear that requests a file name.

You can also enter
the name of the bars' author here, and an optional description. For example:

From Current Web Page:

When your browser
is running with a Web page loaded into it, you can have Alert
Bookmarks download the page and scan the links therein to import as bookmarks.
Select this
option, then click the 'Import/Export' button to begin the process.
From the window
that appears, you can choose to manually place bookmarks into the new
Group Menus, or you can have Alert automatically distribute the new
bookmarks through the menus as shown below:

5. Upload
To The Web As HTML:
-
First select the
bars you want to convert to a Web page, then select this option and
click the 'Import/Export' button.
The following
Window will appear:

Enter your FTP
information: Server Domain Name, Port, User Name, and your Password.
Next enter the folder (directory) on the remote server where the HTML
file is to be uploaded to.
Finally, enter the
file name that the HTML file will have on the remote server. Now
click 'Upload' to begin the process of converting your bookmarks to
HTML, then uploading the resulting Web page.
5. Export
As Text:
-
You can save the
Bookmarks from one or more Bookmark Bars to a Text File by first
selecting the bars you want to save (use [CTRL+CLICK] to select more
than one bar at a time], selecting this option, then clicking the 'Import/Export' button.
You can save your
bookmarks in a comma-delimited ASCII file in the format:
...or in a simple
text format where each bookmark uses three lines:
6. Import From
Internet Explorer:
-
Select the 'Import
From Internet Explorer' radio button and click the 'Import/Export' button.

A file window will
appear. Internet Explorer bookmarks are stored on your hard drive in
a series of folders and sub-folders in your FAVORITES Folder. To
import your bookmarks into Alert, locate the Favorites Folder you
wish to import from. Your Favorites Folder should be located either
in your Windows Folder, or off of your \WINDOWS\PROFILES folder under
the name you logged onto Windows with.

Once you've
located your FAVORITES Folder, click 'Open' on the file window and
wait while Alert imports your bookmarks into new Bookmark Bars.
7. Import From
Netscape:
-
Select the 'Import
From Netscape'
radio button and click the 'Import/Export' button.

A file window will
appear. If you have configured Netscape Communicator to handle
multiple users, your bookmarks are stored on your hard drive in
separate folder for each user (Communicator allows more than one user
to save their preferences for running the program). To import your
bookmarks into Alert, locate your Communicator's USERS folder.
Highlight the BOOKMARK.HTM file there and press the 'Open' button.
Alert imports your bookmarks into new Bookmark Bars.

[Note: If
your Communicator is not configured for multiple users, your
BOOMARK.HTM file should be in your
"\COMMUNICATOR\PROGRAM\DEFAULTS" or your
"\COMMUNICATOR\PROGRAM\" Folder.]
8. Import From
Other
Alert Bookmarks Folder:
-
Select the 'Import
From Other Alert Folder' radio button and click the 'Import/Export' button.

Use the file
window that appears to find the Alert Bookmarks data folder you wish
to Import and click 'Okay'.

WARNING:
All the bookmarks in your current version of Alert will be
overwritten by the Imported bookmarks.
9. Export
As HTML:
-
You can save the
Bookmarks from one or more Bookmark Bars in a ready to use HTML File
(Web page) by first selecting the bars you want to save (use
[CTRL+CLICK] to select more than one bar at a time], then selecting
the Export As HTML option:
This option will
save the entire contents of the Bookmark Bars you select in formatted
HTML. You can choose to include your bookmark comments as descriptive
text for each link, and even choose to save the HTML page in the
current Alert Bookmarks color scheme.
10. Import From
HTML:
-
Select the 'Import
From HTML' radio button and click the 'Import/Export' button.
Use the file
window that appears to find the HTML file you wish to Import
bookmarks from, then click 'Okay'. You can choose to Manually Import
bookmarks so you can choose where they go in the Group Menus, or you
can allow Alert to automatically fill new Bookbars with the imported Bookmarks.
